The BioPod is a molded plastic composting bin with a metal frame base for stable placement where needed. Since the most efficient feeds for soldier grubs tend to be high in moisture content, a drain with a filter directs liquid effluent into a screw-off collection jar. Molded into the unit is a ramp around the entire inner wall, providing a migration route out of the feeding medium. The ramp ends in a hole, and the grubs in the crawl-off phase have no hesitation launching into space through the hole—assuming that on the other end of their fall is earth, and the opportunity to burrow in for pupation. The positioning of a collection bucket beneath the hole, however, results in the migrating grubs’ self-collection. Most active crawl-off is at night, so the flockster simply grabs the collection bucket in the morning and offers the chickens their favorite meal of the day.
